FRIENDSHIP № 18 is a themed issue of School № 1´s English language magazine. It contains articles written by students as part of a project titled ´Sysert, my native land: past, present, future´. The students researched a variety of topics and communicated their results in easily understood English prose. They, with the guidance and help of their teachers, did an excellent job.
I´ve traveled to Sysert three times, and have visited many of the places talked about in the articles, e.g. the Pavel Bazhov Memorial House-Museum. I´ve also spent a lot of time simply walking around the city by myself taking pictures. So I naturally found the articles in FRIENDSHIP № 18 to be quite interesting. In particular, I found the articles about current and future development near the dam and old factory to be very informative - I don´t get to see or hear much news about Sysert!
The magazine FRIENDSHIP is an excellent vehicle for reinforcing what students have been taught in the classroom. English is a relatively difficult language for Russians to learn, and English-related extracurricular activities such as involvement with the magazine make the process a lot more enjoyable. Students can write articles in English and see their compositions in print, as well as those of their classmates and teachers. FRIENDSHIP № 18 multiplied this effect by having students investigate subjects relevant to them.
I´ve visited School № 1 twice and was impressed by the modern facility. On both occasions I gave a talk to a roomful of students, and answered their questions afterwards. By making resources such as my talks and the magazine FRIENDSHIP available to students, the school shows that it also strives to be academically modern. I would like to congratulate everyone involved in creating FRIENDSHIP № 18, and wish them success in the Regional Contest of Student´s Projects.
